Skype Hacked: Let me join into the hype

If you search "Skype Hacked" you'll get alot of hits to websites talking about Skype being protocol-reverse-engineered by an unknown Chinese company. What exactly does it mean to say that Skype has been hacked? Ok, I think for the actual reverse engineering to happen, two things must happen:

One, Skype's proprietary VoIP encryption algorithm must be cracked.

Two, Skype's node system must be bypassed.

Ok, from what I've read, the node system appeared to be bypassed by the supposed test from 1 fella using an ugly GUI talking to another using actual Skype GUI. However, what wasn't shown was the encryption being cracked. One way to show that is to replay the protocol packets.

So was the packets decrypted? Dunno. If not, then I don't think it's any different from say using the Skype Public API or even Skype++ (a free Skype C++ API). Could it be that this Chinese company only managed to write a self-written Skype GUI using the Skype++ API or worse the lousy Skype Public API?

It's quite possible that the reporter or person who "verified" the "hack" was hoodwinked into thinking that the Chinese company did hack into Skype, especially if the reporter was not tech smart or know of these APIs.

So far, other than the 2 screenshots of the "hack demo" and alot of hype surrounding it, nothing else has been mentioned.

Draw your own conclusion based on what I said above.

From Russia with love... Did Russian Hackers overtake in effect Chinese Hackers in the race to reverse engineer the Skype.exe ? This time it's not a hoax or an unfulfilled promise. Here is the QtSkype4.exe. see www.skype-watch.com or http://webtown.typepad.com/webtown/2006/10/from_russia_wit.html
