Of bots and lots of trouble

Today's online gaming world consists of lamers, pros, lag, leavers, n00bs and bots. To the uninitiated, bots are software you run while playing a particular game to automate an activity.

In the old days, they were called macros and were part of the game. These days, to encourage ppl to keep playing n paying, most online games like World of Warcraft and Everquest do not have macros and force players to do everything manually, which then created the term grind, which meant the hard work put in to succeed, much like life.

Well, this grinding created 4 types of players:
--The Grinder: someone who spends hours and hours killing monsters manually.
--The Casual: opposite of The Grinder, play only abit, does not want to put in the effort.
--The EBayer: someone who is Casual and has real $$$ to buy items online.
--The Botter: someone who uses software to Grind.

Recently I stumbled upon a site which had 3 software for download, bots for an online game called SilkRoad Online (korean fantasy MMO). Most Korean MMOs are basic grinding type games and SilkRoad is no exception. These software run on the background and usually use screen coordinates to fake mouse presses to automate activities like attacking, using equipment (like health potions).

However, more often than not, these wonderful toys bear hidden gifts, in the form of keyloggers to capture your username and password (among other things) so they can login and steal all your items.

This also spawned a different type of gamer, the cheater or maphacker. Same deal, runs in the background and offers a number of cheats like being able to see thru walls or reveal your enemies' locations. But the same shite can and is inside the programs. Ditto for the alrighteous nocd crack.

Some people like think, "As long as I have firewall and I dun allow access I'm fine". Well, think again, cuz these programs are smart enuff such that they ride ontop of other apps to deliver their goods.

I dun play SilkRoad Online myself (I'm a RF Online fan), and a quick google showed that some SilkRoad Online forums discuss "I LOST MY ITEMS" while not admitting they use bots. Duh... stupid is as stupid does.

The basic rule is, if it's too good to be free, it's usually not.

This is true, and I dare say every bot for silkroad steals some information from the user.
